At a glance, Apple's iPhone 13 Pro Max and the OnePlus 10 Pro could be the same phone. It's a similar story with many of today's latest handsets. Both are sleek, premium-feeling, and built to similar styles and specifications.
The
OnePlus 10 Pro and
iPhone 13 Pro Max are excellent smartphone options. Between the two handsets, there are similarities aplenty. Yet, on closer inspection, various things do, in fact, set them apart. So, which is the best? To work that out, it's necessary to take a more in-depth look at the two smartphones' measurements, processors, cameras, and more.
Size of the OnePlus 10 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
Side-by-side, the OnePlus 10 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max are similarly sized. That's largely unsurprising given that both have 6.7-inch displays. They're both OLEDs, too, and each boasts an adaptive
120Hz refresh rate.
However, Apple's largest iPhone is definitely bigger than the OnePlus 10 Pro. It's not necessarily a sizable difference, but it's something that's especially noticeable in hand. Conversely, the iPhone is actually a fraction slimmer than the OnePlus. It doesn't feel like it, though. That's mainly down to the iPhone's angled edges, whereas the OnePlus's body is more rounded. As such, it feels more natural and less awkward to hold.
The OnePlus 10 Pro is also slightly lighter than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The two handsets weigh in at around 7.1 ounces and 8.4 ounces apiece, respectively.
Processing Power
There's nothing to fault as far as the proprietary Apple processor in the iPhone 13 Pro Max goes. Apple's A15 chip continues to attract rave reviews almost across the board. Be that as it may, the OnePlus 10 Pro arguably comes with the next best thing. That's Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. It, too, is a highly regarded processor.
Both handsets, therefore, feel suitably fast and well-equipped. Still, in benchmark testing, the A15 chip in the iPhone 13 Pro Max is anywhere up to 75 percent faster. That said, in a day-to-day sense, it's unlikely to be noticeable under most conditions. Further to processing power, the OnePlus 10 Pro gets 8GB of RAM – 2GB more than the iPhone 13 Pro Max's 6GB memory.
Again, it's not likely to be overly noticeable. That's especially true with the OnePlus benefiting memory-wise and the iPhone packing more outright processing power to compensate. What's rather more apparent and arguably important is the disparity between the two handsets' storage provisions.
The OnePlus is available with either 128GB or 256GB of non-expandable storage. Meanwhile, iPhone 13 Pro Max buyers have the option of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of space. Of course, if someone needs
more space than 256GB, they might write off the OnePlus 10 Pro in favor of the more spacious iPhone.
Picture-Taking Abilities
Somewhere that the OnePlus 10 Pro excels is when it comes to its picture-taking abilities. Even up against the best-selling iPhone 13 Pro Max, which also has a great camera setup, the OnePlus 10 Pro proves incredibly tough to beat.
Both phones get triple-camera systems on the back and selfie cameras on the front. They promise much the same, but the OnePlus 10 Pro does so with higher resolution figures and larger sensors. The OnePlus 10 Pro also comes with built-in technology from
Swedish camera manufacturer Hasselblad – something which began with the
OnePlus 9 series.
Results between the two phones' cameras vary. The iPhone 13 Pro Max typically produces warmer images, while the OnePlus 10 Pro's are noticeably cooler. Of course, it's possible to adjust subsequent photos either way. However, where one phone's camera does stand out over the other is in terms of nighttime photography. The iPhone performs significantly better here.
And, despite the OnePlus 10 Pro promising 8K video-capturing abilities, the 4K-resolution iPhone 13 Pro Max provides the most stable and true-to-life video footage.
Warranty Conditions
Like almost all of today's smartphones, the OnePlus 10 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max get one-year limited manufacturer warranties as standard. iPhone 13 Pro Max buyers can upgrade this coverage with
AppleCare+, albeit at a high cost. Those who favor the OnePlus 10 Pro can upgrade with a OnePlus Protection Plan.
Alternatively, the OnePlus 10 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max buyers can lock in a comparable or superior
extended smartphone warranty with
Upsie. Upsie's Smartphone Subscription Warranties offer peace of mind in the event of manufacturing defects and other failures. They also protect against accidental damage, including drops and liquid spills.
By dealing directly with Upsie's warranty experts, consumers cut out the middleman. As a result, Upsie's policies are more affordable than those sold by manufacturers and retailers.
Closing Considerations
Both the OnePlus 10 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have strengths and weaknesses. As far as looks go, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is arguably a more handsome phone thanks to its sharp, clean lines. Yet, the softer-shaped OnePlus 10 Pro remains nicer to hold.
Performance-wise, there's relatively little to set the two handsets apart. And while the OnePlus 10 Pro's camera setup is more feature-packed and looks better on paper, the iPhone 13 Pro Max ultimately performs just as well, if not better – particularly in regards to video.
The latter also benefits from significantly more storage, should buyers wish to upgrade. Of course, this comes at a cost. The iPhone 13 Pro Max is also a more expensive phone by default. In 128GB guise, it costs $1,099 — $200 more than the $899 OnePlus 10 Pro. On which note, and for the money, the OnePlus 10 Pro is an immensely capable smartphone.
Unfortunately, it's also one let down by its limited storage capacity and what increasingly feels like a slightly dated design. By contrast, the costlier iPhone 13 Pro Max, while not as pleasant to hold, both looks and feels like a more modern and premium device, especially in Apple's all-new Alpine Green finish.
