How to Make a Claim with AT&T Smartphone Insurance

AT&T is one of the largest wireless phone carrier networks, and like many phone carriers and retailers, they offer a phone insurance plan through Asurion to protect your device. The AT&T salesperson will make their Protect Advantage Plan sound like the best way to protect your device from damage and worth the additional monthly costs. However, other options, like Upsie Smartphone Subscription Warranties, save you money while protecting your device.

Details of AT&T Protect Advantage Plan Through Asurion

AT&T Protect Advantage plan is AT&T’s phone insurance that they will offer their customers upon purchase. AT&T works directly with Asurion, meaning that it's really Asurion offering the warranty. There are two options you can choose from, a plan that covers one device for $14 to $17 a month or a plan that covers four devices for $45 a month.
The one-device plan will cover your device for three claims for loss, theft, or physical damage and two for accidental damage, with a maximum claim value of $2,500. The maximum claim value for the four-device plan is a collective $3,500 covering eight collective claims for loss, theft, or physical damage and six claims for accidental damage.
AT&T claims to offer unlimited $29 cracked screen repairs, but this only applies to certain devices. Eligible devices, according to their Terms and Conditions include:
  • iPhone 8 models
  • iPhone X, XR, Xs, and Xs Max
  • iPhone 11 models

How to Make AT&T Asurion Insurance Claim

You can make an AT&T insurance claim through Asurion by visiting this site to file online or call 888-562-8662. You must file your claim within 60 days of the damage or loss. When you make a claim, be sure to have this information at the ready:
  • Your device brand and model
  • Your wireless security password OR the last four digits of the account owner's SSN or Tax ID number
When you complete your claim, you should receive an email that allows you to track your claim status. Once your claim is approved, you’ll be able to schedule a repair at a local store or receive a replacement device, depending on the damage. You should be able to get a replacement device within 1 to 2 days. If you do, remember to return your old device, or you can get charged an $850 non-return fee.

AT&T Versus Upsie Phone Warranties

If you want to protect your smartphone, your retailer’s insurance plan isn’t the only option. Upsie has extended warranty subscription plans for all major smartphones that can save customers money and stress. Note that because AT&T works through Asurion, customers are subjected to the same high prices and deductibles that Asurion is known for.
For one phone Protection Plan, AT&T charges $14 a month for Tier 1 and 2 phones and $17 a month for Tier 3 and 4 phones. Most smartphone owners have Tier 3 and 4 phones. For example, the iPhone 12 Mini is in Tier 3, and the iPhone 13 is in Tier 4. That means customers are paying $204 a year for phone protection. AT&T’s Protect Advantage plan also has steep deductibles — $225 for Tier 3 devices and $275 for Tier 4 devices.
In contrast, Upsie has extended warranty plans for all major cell phones for a much more affordable price. For example, purchasing a 2-year iPhone 13 Pro Max warranty would cost $9.99 per month. Additionally, the plan has a $0 cracked screen repair deductible and a deductible of $109 for other repairs. Even if you combine both deductibles, that’s still less than the AT&T deductible.
Upsie covers manufacturing defects, screen cracks, drops, liquid damage, and more. Those with AT&T can cancel their Asurion insurance by calling AT&T support or by logging into AT&T’s My Wireless page and removing the AT&T Mobile Protection Pack.
