All About the Google Repair Kit for Pixel Phones

We recently wrote about the Apple Self Service Repair kit that allows tech-savvy iPhone users to make repairs from home. And it appears this is a trend that’s quickly catching on, as Samsung and now Google has followed suit with similar repair kits. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

What is the Google Repair Kit?

Simply put, it’s a home repair kit for DIYers who feel comfortable fixing their pixel phones on their own.
“Genuine Pixel spare parts will be available for purchase at ifixit.com for Pixel 2 through Pixel 6 Pro, as well as future Pixel models, in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and EU countries where Pixel is available,” writes COO of consumer hardware at Google, Ana Corrales.
Corrales continues, “The full range of spare parts for common Pixel phone repairs — things like batteries, replacement displays, cameras, and more — will be available either individually or in iFixit Fix Kits, which include tools like screwdriver bits and spudgers.”
Rather than taking your damaged Pixel phone to a local repair shop or sending it to a professional technician, you can do it yourself. This ties into Google’s mission of increasing sustainability by improving product repairability and helping consumers extend the lifespan of their purchases. And, of course, they’re looking to keep up with Apple, Samsung, and other electronics providers that already have more fleshed-out home repair kits.

When Did the Google Repair Kit Officially Launch?

The quote from Google COO Ana Corrales was from early April 2022. But it wasn’t until late June 2022 that the Google Repair Kit officially launched.
You can find the full list of kits currently available on ifixit.com.

How Much Does the Google Repair Kit Cost?

The exact cost will vary depending upon what needs to be replaced and the replacement parts that are included. On the low end for something minor like a Google Pixel XL Charging Assembly, a repair kit costs $24.99. On the high end, for something major like a Google Pixel 6 Pro Screen, it costs $199.99. Across the board, however, you can expect to pay somewhere between $50 to $125.
As for kit contents, the Google Pixel 6 Pro Screen includes:
  • Front glass digitizer screen
  • 6.71 inch 1440 x 3120 pixel AMOLED display
  • New Genuine Pixel 6 Pro screen
  • Pixel 6 Pro display adhesive
  • iOpener
  • Set of six iFixit opening picks
  • Spudger
  • iFixit opening tool
  • Suction handle
  • Angled tweezers
  • Alcohol pad
  • Precision bit driver
  • 4 mm precision bits
Note that all parts except for batteries come with a lifetime guarantee (batteries have a one-year warranty).

Should You Try to Repair Your Pixel Phone Yourself?

We’re still in the infancy of DIY electronics repair kits. Apple led the charge, and other big names like Samsung and Google are following suit. Because it’s still so new that there are a lot of kinks left to work out. Improvements will no doubt be made over time, and this concept will likely be ubiquitous in upcoming years.
But for now, we suggest only using the Google repair kit if you’re highly knowledgeable and comfortable making phone repairs on your own. iFixit has some excellent repair guides and does everything it can to simplify things. However, it’s easy to run into trouble if you’re new to the process. So be realistic about your abilities before deciding to order one of these kits.

Should You Buy an Extended Pixel Smartphone Warranty

Most Google Pixel smartphones come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty. But once that period ends, you’re no longer covered.
While the Google repair kit looks promising in time, it’s still recommended to purchase an extended Pixel smartphone warranty to protect your investment. With the Pixel 6 currently starting at $499, you don’t want to risk it.
With Upsie's Smartphone Subscription Warranty for $9.99 per month, you get comprehensive coverage that costs less than in-store offers. Upsie offers comprehensive two-year smartphone warranties that cover defects, mechanical failure, and accidental damage for drops, spills, screen cracks, and more. Claims can be made 24/7/365 for a prompt repair or replacement. And you always have full control of your plans through Upsie.com if you ever need to make changes. You can also cancel at any time with no penalties or fees.
